Kotlin development

A concise, null-safe language on the JVM, and the language Android is written in — one skill set covering an existing server estate and a native handset app.

When we reach for it

Native Android, and JVM services where a team wants Java’s ecosystem without Java’s verbosity. Nullability in the type system removes the most common crash in a mobile codebase before it is written.

When we would argue against it

On its own it is not an argument for going native. If an app is mostly forms, lists and a network call, we will usually recommend one cross-platform codebase and spend the saved effort on the backend instead.

What it looks like in delivery

We use Kotlin where the value of an Android app is in the parts a web view cannot reach: background execution, the camera, sensors, and behaviour that has to survive the operating system killing the process mid-task.
